The question

Which schools are over capacity, where do students live relative to their school (distance), and where is enrollment growing over time?

A school board uploads its schools, catchments, student home locations by enrollment date, bus stops, childcare centers, new housing developments, enrollment by year and staffing, and a capacity review. It wants to know which schools are over capacity and where enrollment grows.

Space time hot spots

What this analysis is. Emerging hot spots: Where hot spots are new, consecutive, intensifying, persistent, diminishing, sporadic, oscillating or historical over time 5. In ArcGIS it is Emerging Hot Spot Analysis or Create Space Time Cube 5.

Why it was run on this data. Student homes carry dates in 'enrolled_on': emerging hot spot analysis finds new, intensifying and fading hot spots per month 6.

What it found. The analysis generated 96 features for the "Emerging hot spots: Student homes" layer 7.

What the data was built to show

  • Enrollment grows fastest near the new housing in the north-east around 43.69843, -79.36600.
  • Schools there run over capacity (utilization above 110 percent).
  • Student homes cluster around the same area; distance to school is longest at the catchment edges.

Expected analysis families: aggregation, hot_spots, density, space_time, proximity.
