Field operations terrain

Observation posts, areas of operation, viewshed and mobility

Sennybridge, Brecon Beacons, Wales, United Kingdomsynthetic data, real placeMaps, charts and report
The question

What can each observation post see (viewshed), where is the terrain too steep (slope) for vehicles, and where do patrol reports cluster?

A field operations planner uploads observation posts, areas of operation, tracks and routes, four weeks of patrol reports, obstacles, landing zones, water crossings, a terrain model, a patrol log and unit roster, and exercise orders. It wants to know what each post can see, where the terrain is too steep and where reports cluster.

What the data was built to show

  • Patrol reports cluster behind the knoll near 30U VC 61837 64145, in ground the posts cannot see (viewshed from the observation posts).
  • Steep ridge flanks limit vehicles (slope).
  • Reports peak at night during the four weeks of the exercise.

Expected analysis families: terrain, space_time, hot_spots, density, aggregation.
