Fire perimeters, fuels, ignitions and terrain

Bend, Oregon, United Statessynthetic data, real placeMaps, charts and report
The question

Where do ignitions cluster over time, how does terrain and slope shape fire risk, and which fuel units overlap recent fires?

A forest agency uploads fire perimeters by date, fuel units, eight years of ignitions, forest roads, weather stations with daily readings, fuel treatments, lookouts, a terrain model and a treatment plan. It wants to know where ignitions concentrate, which fuels burned and how slope shapes the risk.

Near repeat

What this analysis is. Repeat and near repeat classification: Classify incidents as originators, repeats (same place) or near repeats within a distance and time window, with a Knox test table 20. In ArcGIS it is Repeat and Near Repeat Classification or Near Repeat Calculator 20.

Why it was run on this data. Near repeat analysis tests whether Ignitions close in space also follow each other within 30 days 21.

What it found. The near repeat classification utilized the gp_near_repeat tool 22 and processed the Ignitions dataset 10. The tool yielded overall results showing a count of 900 22, 63 chains 22, and a maximum distance of 200 m 22. The execution was efficient, linking 80 pairs in an elapsed time of 18 ms 22. Financially, the operation incurred a cost of 0.077 22.

What the data was built to show

  • Ignitions cluster along the highway corridor (human causes) and on the two ridges in summer (lightning).
  • Ignitions rise over the eight years and peak every August.
  • Slope and hillshade show the ridges; fuel units overlap the recent fire perimeters.

Expected analysis families: terrain, hot_spots, space_time, density, aggregation.
